Following a briefing from the Cantilever team, the client realized that a number of approaches and options exist to optimizing their legal department. Through optimizing their legal operations and adopting appropriate technologies they could be undertaking their legal work in a more cost effective and efficient manner, could be better managing their legal risks and also providing a better service to their business and their business’s customers. Their challenge was that they didn’t know where to start.
In response to the client’s challenge, the Cantilever team undertook a strategy discovery project for the client to identify and prioritise opportunities for optimisation of their legal function. Cantilever met with the legal department’s leadership team to understand their current strategy, scope and scale of the department, its relationship and standing within their business, both on a group wide and divisional level and any pressing needs and challenges that they were facing. Cantilever then undertook a detailed analysis exercise, capturing and collating data on their services, volumes, methods of working, tools being used, alignment with business strategy and pain points or challenges. Based on this analysis, the Cantilever team were then able to identify and recommend opportunities for optimisation of the respective services leveraging tools such as process optimisation, templates, playbooks, self-service guidance/ checklists, document automation, alternative legal resourcing, legal project management, case management and work flow and data analytics. Cantilever was also able to recommend a strategy and prioritisation for implementing the various optimisation options. All of the analysis and recommendations were presented to the client in a detailed report.
The above analysis provided the General Counsel and the senior legal team with a prioritised set of recommendations for optimising their legal function and the benefits they will deliver. Working with Cantilever gave the client confidence in a very short period of time that they were heading in the right direction with their legal operations efforts rather than spending potentially significant amounts of time and resources discovering the best approach for themselves, potentially through trial and error. This exercise served as a starting point for the legal team to allocate responsibility for various legal operations workstreams to members of the legal team and work on specific implementations is currently underway in collaboration with the Cantilever team.
